DINOSAUR MASS EXTINCTION : DINOSAUR SPECIES 4) TRYANNOSAURUS REX AND ITS VIRTUAL PRESUMED HUNT FOR STEGOSAUR

Tyrannosaurus rex (T. rex) was one of the largest and most powerful carnivorous dinosaurs, often called the “king of the tyrant lizards.” It lived in western North America during the late Cretaceous period, about 68–66 million years ago, and was an apex predator with bone-crushing jaws and immense strength.

Key Facts About T. rex

Scientific name: Tyrannosaurus rex

Meaning of name: “Tyrant lizard king”

Period: Late Cretaceous (68–66 million years ago)

Location: Western North America (Hell Creek Formation and similar sites)

Diet: Carnivore — hunted large herbivores like Triceratops and Edmontosaurus

Size: Up to 12–13 meters (39–43 feet) long, about 12 feet tall at the hip

Weight: Between 8,000–14,000 kg (17,600–30,900 lbs)

Speed: Could run up to 32 km/h (20 mph) for short bursts

Physical Features

Skull & Teeth:

Skull up to 1.5 meters (5 feet) long.

50–60 serrated teeth, each about 8 inches long, designed for gripping and crushing bone.

Bite force estimated at 6 tons of pressure, among the strongest of any land animal.

Arms:

Infamously small, only about 1 meter (3 feet) long.

Likely used for grasping prey, mating, or balance, though their exact function remains debated.

Posture:

Walked on two powerful hind legs.

Body held horizontally with a long tail for balance.

Behavior & Ecology

Predation: Actively hunted large dinosaurs but also scavenged when possible. Fossil evidence (tooth marks, coprolites) confirms both behaviors.

Senses:

Exceptional sense of smell, with olfactory abilities rivaling modern predators.

Likely used smell to track prey, find mates, and detect rivals.

Growth: Rapid growth during adolescence, gaining up to 600 kg per year until adulthood around age 20. Some individuals lived up to 30 years.

 Famous Specimens

Sue (Chicago Field Museum): 12.8 meters (42 feet) long, one of the most complete skeletons.

Scotty (Saskatchewan): 13 meters (42.7 feet) long, weighing nearly 8,870 kg (19,555 lbs) — the largest known T. rex.

Quick Comparison Table

Feature         T. rex Details

Length           12–13 m (39–43 ft)

Weight          8–14 tons

Bite Force     ~6 tons

Teeth  50–60, up to 8 in long

Speed ~32 km/h (20 mph)

Diet    Carnivore (Triceratops, Edmontosaurus)

Lifespan        Up to 30 years

Hypothetical “What If” Hunt for Stegosaur

If we imagine them together in a fantasy setting:

T. rex would have the advantage of size, speed, and bone-crushing bite force.

Stegosaurus, however, was no easy prey — its spiked tail (thagomizer) could deliver lethal blows, even piercing a predator’s body.

The clash would be brutal: T. rex lunging with massive jaws, while Stegosaurus swings its tail defensively. A well-placed strike could cripple or even kill the predator.

So in a speculative showdown, it’s not a guaranteed victory for T. rex — Stegosaurus had serious defenses that could turn the tables.
