Triceratops was a large, plant-eating dinosaur
from the Late Cretaceous period, famous for its three horns and massive bony
frill. It lived about 69–66 million years ago in what is now western North
America, and was one of the last non-avian dinosaurs before the mass
extinction.
Key
Physical Features
Size:
About 8–9 meters (26–30 feet) long and weighing 6–10 tons.
Skull:
Gigantic, up to 3 meters (10 feet) long, with one of the largest skulls of any
land animal.
Horns:
Two long horns above the eyes and one shorter horn on the nose.
Frill:
Large bony frill extending from the back of the skull, sometimes decorated with
small spikes.
Teeth:
Specialized shearing teeth arranged in columns, adapted for cutting tough
vegetation.
Habitat & Era
Time
Period: Late Cretaceous, 69–66 million years ago.
Location:
Western North America (the ancient continent of Laramidia).
Environment:
Shared its ecosystem with predators like Tyrannosaurus rex, which likely preyed
on it.
Diet
& Behavior
Diet:
Herbivorous, feeding on tough plants such as palm fronds and cycads.
Movement:
Quadrupedal (walked on four sturdy legs).
Social
Behavior: Unlike many other ceratopsians, Triceratops fossils are usually found
alone, suggesting it may have been more solitary.
Function
of Horns & Frill
Defense:
Traditionally thought to be used against predators like T. rex. Fossils show
healed bite marks, proving some survived attacks.
Display
& Mating: Modern studies suggest horns and frills were also used for
species recognition, courtship rituals, and dominance battles.
Combat
Evidence: Frill punctures indicate males fought each other, likely to impress
females.
Discovery & Classification
First
Discovery: 1887 by Othniel Charles Marsh, initially mistaken for a giant bison.
Naming:
Officially named Triceratops (“three-horned face”) in 1889.
Species:
Two recognized species today — T. horridus and T. prorsus.
