Arthropleura was one of the largest land invertebrates that ever lived. It looked like a gigantic millipede and roamed Earth's forests during the Carboniferous Period, about 346-290 million years ago.

Quick Facts

Scientific Name: Arthropleura

Period: Late Carboniferous to Early Permian

Length: Up to 2.5-2.7 meters (8-9 feet) long

Width: Around 50 cm (20 inches)

Weight: Estimated over 50 kg

Diet: Herbivore (plant-eater)

Habitat: Dense swamp forests of ancient Europe and North America

Appearance

Arthropleura had:

A long, flattened body made of many armored segments.

Numerous legs underneath its body, similar to modern millipedes.

A hard exoskeleton that protected it from predators.

No evidence of venom, claws, or hunting adaptations.

Imagine a millipede as long as a small car crawling through prehistoric forests!

Why Did It Grow So Large?

Scientists believe Arthropleura's enormous size was possible because:

High oxygen levels in the Carboniferous atmosphere (up to about 35%, compared with 21% today).

Abundant vegetation such as ferns, horsetails, and seed ferns.

Few large land predators existed when it first evolved.

Diet

Fossil evidence suggests Arthropleura fed mainly on:

Ferns

Decaying plant matter

Leaves and other forest vegetation

It was likely an important recycler in ancient ecosystems.

Fossil Discoveries

Scientists have found:

Body fossils

Large fossilized trackways showing its movements

Impressions of its armored segments

Some trackways indicate Arthropleura walked efficiently through muddy swamp forests.

Extinction

Arthropleura disappeared around the Early Permian Period. Possible reasons include:

Climate becoming drier

Loss of swamp habitats

Falling atmospheric oxygen levels

Size Comparison

Animal       Length Modern Giant Millipede  30 cm (1 ft)

Human       1.7 m (5.6 ft)

Arthropleura      2.5-2.7 m (8-9 ft)

Fun Fact: If you enjoy prehistoric giants like Megatherium and Woolly Rhinoceros, Arthropleura represents a much earlier era. It lived more than 200 million years before the first dinosaurs appeared, making it one of the most impressive giants of the Paleozoic world.
