"Prehistoric rhinoceros"  mean the ancient ancestors and relatives of modern rhinos, they were a diverse group of mammals that evolved over millions of years.

What Were Prehistoric Rhinoceroses?

Prehistoric rhinoceroses belonged to the family Rhinocerotidae, which first appeared about 50 million years ago. They ranged from small forest-dwelling animals to gigantic hornless giants.

Famous Prehistoric Rhinos

1. Woolly Rhinoceros (Coelodonta antiquitatis)

Lived during the Ice Age.

Covered in thick fur.

Had two large horns.

Roamed the cold grasslands of Europe and Asia.

2. Paraceratherium (Indricotherium)

The largest land mammal ever known.

Lived about 34-23 million years ago.

Reached heights of 5 meters (16 feet) at the shoulder.

Weighed up to 15-20 tonnes.

Had a long neck and no horn.

🦏 Compared with a human, Paraceratherium was as tall as a two-story building.

3. Teleoceras

Lived in North America.

Had short legs and a barrel-shaped body.

Looked somewhat like a hippopotamus.

Spent much time near rivers and lakes.

Appearance

Different prehistoric rhinos looked very different:

Some had large horns.

Some had no horns at all.

Some were covered in thick fur.

Others lived in warm forests and had little body hair.

Diet

All prehistoric rhinoceroses were plant-eaters (herbivores), feeding on:

Grasses

Leaves

Shrubs

Small tree branches

Extinction

Many prehistoric rhino species disappeared because of:

Climate change

Habitat changes

Competition with other animals

Human hunting (for some later species such as the woolly rhinoceros)

Interesting Fact

The gigantic Paraceratherium was much larger than any elephant alive today and is considered one of the greatest terrestrial mammals ever to walk the Earth.

Timeline

50 million years ago: Early rhino ancestors appear.

34 million years ago: Giant Paraceratherium thrives.

5 million years ago: Many modern rhino lineages develop.

10,000 years ago: Woolly rhinoceros becomes extinct.
