Anomalocaris was a large apex predator of the Cambrian seas, while Hallucigenia was a tiny, spiny worm-like creature whose bizarre anatomy baffled scientists for decades. Together, they represent two of the most iconic and strange animals of the Cambrian Explosion.





🦑 Anomalocaris – The Apex Predator






  • Time Period: Early to Middle Cambrian (approx. 520–499 million years ago).
  • Size: Up to 1 meter long, making it one of the largest animals of its time.
  • Anatomy:
    • Large compound eyes with up to 16,000 lenses.
    • Frontal appendages with spines for grasping prey.
    • Swimming flaps along the body for propulsion.
    • Circular oral cone mouth with toothed plates.
  • Diet: Active predator, likely feeding on soft-bodied animals. Early reconstructions suggested it crushed trilobites, but newer studies show it was better suited for softer prey.
  • Importance: Demonstrates that complex predation and advanced vision had already evolved during the Cambrian Explosion, sparking predator-prey arms races.

🪱 Hallucigenia – The “Hallucination” Creature



  • Time Period: Middle Cambrian (approx. 508 million years ago).
  • Size: Very small, only 0.5–5.5 cm long.
  • Anatomy:
    • Slender tubular body with 7 pairs of fleshy legs ending in claws.
    • 7 pairs of rigid dorsal spines for defense.
    • A tiny head with simple eyes and a mouth lined with needle-like teeth.
  • Discovery & Misinterpretation:
    • First described in 1911, but in 1977 reconstructed upside down—scientists thought it walked on its spines!
    • In 1991, fossils from China revealed the correct orientation: legs below, spines above.
    • In 2015, its head was finally identified with eyes and teeth, confirming its relation to velvet worms (Onychophora).
  • Ecology: Likely a scavenger or micro-predator, using suction feeding. Its spines protected it from predators like Anomalocaris.
