Permian trilobites were the last survivors of a oncedominant Paleozoic group, reaching peak diversity in the Middle Permian before vanishing entirely in the endPermian mass extinction. They lived in varied marine habitats, from shallow sandy shelves to deeper muddy basins, and show fascinating preservation styles that reveal their ecology and demise.

Trilobites dominated Paleozoic seas but had already declined by the Late Devonian.

Permian period (299–252 million years ago): A few resilient groups persisted, diversifying into multiple genera.
