Junk DNA by Nessa Carey:
For decades after the identification of the
structure of DNA, scientists focused only on genes, the regions of the genome
that contain codes for the production of proteins. Other regions that make up
98 percent of the human genome were dismissed as "junk," sequences
that serve no purpose. But researchers have recently discovered variations and
modulations in this junk DNA that are involved with a number of intractable
diseases. Our increasing knowledge of junk DNA has led to innovative research
and treatment approaches that may finally ameliorate some of these conditions.
Junk
DNA can play vital and unanticipated roles in the control of gene expression,
from fine-tuning individual genes to switching off entire chromosomes. These
functions have forced scientists to revisit the very meaning of the word
"gene" and have engendered a spirited scientific battle over whether
or not this genomic "nonsense" is the source of human biological
complexity. Drawing on her experience with leading scientific investigators in
Europe and North America, Nessa Carey provides a clear and compelling
introduction to junk DNA and its critical involvement in phenomena as diverse
as genetic diseases, viral infections, sex determination in mammals, and
evolution. We are only now unlocking the secrets of junk DNA, and Nessa Carey's
book is an essential resource for navigating the history and controversies of
this fast-growing, hotly disputed field.

Land of the
Seven Rivers: A Brief History of India's Geography: By Sanjeev Sanyal
Did
the Great Flood of Indian legend actually happen? Why did the Buddha walk to
Sarnath to give his first sermon? How did the Europeans map India?
The
history of any country begins with its geography. With sparkling wit and
intelligence, Sanjeev Sanyal sets off to explore India and look at how the
country’s history was shaped by, among other things, its rivers, mountains and
cities. Traversing remote mountain passes, visiting ancient archaeological
sites, crossing rivers in shaky boats and immersing himself in old records and
manuscripts, he considers questions about Indian history that we rarely ask:
Why do Indians call their country Bharat? How did the British build the
railways across the subcontinent? What was it like to sail on an Indian Ocean
merchant ship in the fifth century AD? Why was the world's highest mountain
named after George Everest?
Sanjeev Sanyal:
Currently
the Global Strategist of one of the world’s largest banks, Sanjeev Sanyal is a
prolific writer who divides his time between India and Singapore. An Eisenhower
Fellow, he was named Young Global Leader for 2010 by the World Economic Forum.
His last book was The Indian Renaissance: India's Rise after a Thousand Years
of Decline, published by Penguin in 2008
The Lost Years of Jesus:By Elizabeth Clare Prophet

manuscripts plus three different translations of the texts. Illustrated with

My Gita :by Devdutt Pattanaik
In
My Gita, acclaimed mythologist Devdutt Pattanaik demystifies The Bhagavad Gita
for the contemporary reader. His unique approach—thematic rather than
verse-by-verse—makes the ancient treatise eminently accessible, combined as it
is with his trademark illustrations and simple diagrams.
In a
world that seems spellbound by argument over dialogue, vi-vaad over sam-vaad,
Devdutt highlights how Krishna nudges Arjuna to understand rather than judge
his relationships. This becomes relevant today when we are increasingly
indulging and isolating the self (self-improvement, self-actualization,
self-realization—even selfies!).We forget that we live in an ecosystem of
others, where we can nourish each other with food, love and meaning, even when we
fight.
So
let My Gita inform your Gita.

The Interpretation of Dreams: by Sigmund Freud
Freud's
discovery that the dream is the means by which the unconscious can be explored
is undoubtedly the most revolutionary step forward in the entire history of
psychology. Dreams, according to his theory, represent the hidden fulfillment
of our unconscious wishes.
Sigmund Freud:
Freud
was an Austrian neurologist and the founder of psychoanalysis, who created an
entirely new approach to the understanding of the human personality. He is
regarded as one of the most influential - and controversial - minds of the 20th
century.
Sigismund
(later changed to Sigmund) Freud was born on 6 May 1856 in Freiberg, Moravia
(now Pribor in the Czech Republic). His father was a merchant. The family moved
to Leipzig and then settled in Vienna, where Freud was educated. Freud's family
were Jewish but he was himself non-practising.
In
1873, Freud began to study medicine at the University of Vienna. After
graduating, he worked at the Vienna General Hospital. He collaborated with
Josef Breuer in treating hysteria by the recall of painful experiences under
hypnosis. In 1885, Freud went to Paris as a student of the neurologist Jean
Charcot. On his return to Vienna the following year, Freud set up in private
practice, specialising in nervous and brain disorders. The same year he married
Martha Bernays, with whom he had six children.
Freud
developed the theory that humans have an unconscious in which sexual and
aggressive impulses are in perpetual conflict for supremacy with the defences
against them. In 1897, he began an intensive analysis of himself. In 1900, his
major work 'The Interpretation of Dreams' was published in which Freud analysed
dreams in terms of unconscious desires and experiences.
In
1902, Freud was appointed Professor of Neuropathology at the University of
Vienna, a post he held until 1938. Although the medical establishment disagreed
with many of his theories, a group of pupils and followers began to gather
around Freud. In 1910, the International Psychoanalytic Association was founded
with Carl Jung, a close associate of Freud's, as the president. Jung later
broke with Freud and developed his own theories.
After
World War One, Freud spent less time in clinical observation and concentrated
on the application of his theories to history, art, literature and
anthropology. In 1923, he published 'The Ego and the Id', which suggested a new
structural model of the mind, divided into the 'id, the 'ego' and the
'superego'.
In
1933, the Nazis publicly burnt a number of Freud's books. In 1938, shortly
after the Nazis annexed Austria, Freud left Vienna for London with his wife and
daughter Anna.
Freud
had been diagnosed with cancer of the jaw in 1923, and underwent more than 30
operations. He died of cancer on 23 September 1939.
