News of This Week:
Stroke survivors do advance floor yoga postures focused on hip and ankle range of motion and strength |
1) Yoga
May Help Stroke Survivors Improve Balance:
In a
small pilot study, researchers tested the potential benefits of yoga among
chronic stroke survivors -- those whose stroke occurred more than six months
earlier.
"For
people with chronic stroke, something like yoga in a group environment is cost
effective and appears to improve motor function and balance," said Arlene
Schmid, Ph.D., O.T.R., lead researcher and a rehabilitation research scientist
at Roudebush Veterans Administration-Medical Center and Indiana University,
Department of Occupational Therapy in Indianapolis, Ind.
The
study's 47 participants, about three-quarters of them male veterans, were
divided into three groups: twice-weekly group yoga for eight weeks; a
"yoga-plus" group, which met twice weekly and had a relaxation
recording to use at least three times a week; and a usual medical care group
that did no rehabilitation.
The yoga
classes, taught by a registered yoga therapist, included modified yoga postures,
relaxation, and meditation. Classes grew more challenging each week.
Compared
with patients in the usual-care group, those who completed yoga or yoga-plus
significantly improved their balance.
Modeling of New Enzymes Helps Develop Therapies for Cocaine Abuse |
2)
Modeling of New Enzymes Helps Develop Therapies for Cocaine Abuse:
Researchers
from the University of Kentucky have designed and discovered a series of highly
efficient enzymes that effectively metabolize cocaine. These high-activity
cocaine-metabolizing enzymes could potentially prevent cocaine from producing
physiological effects, and could aid in the treatment of drug dependency.
The
results of this study by Chang-Guo Zhan et al are published in the journal PLOS
Computational Biology.
The
effectiveness of the enzymes' work was evaluated through modeling cocaine
pharmacokinetics, the study of the body's action on administered external
substances, such as cocaine, when the enzyme exists in the body. As there is no
FDA-approved anti-cocaine medication, the medical and social consequences of
cocaine abuse have made the development of anti-cocaine medication a high
priority.
Administration
of an enzyme to enhance cocaine metabolism has been recognized as a promising
treatment strategy for overdose and abuse. A remarkable feature of the
enzyme-based therapeutic approach is that one enzyme molecule can degrade many
thousands of drug molecules per minute.
The first bio-inspired microrobot capable of not just walking on water like the water strider – but continuously jumping up and down like a real water strider – now is a reality |
3) First
Robot That Mimics the Water Striders' Jumping Abilities:
The first bio-inspired microrobot capable of
not just walking on water like the water strider -- but continuously jumping up
and down like a real water strider -- now is a reality. Scientists reported
development of the agile microrobot, which could use its jumping ability to
avoid obstacles on reconnaissance or other missions.
Qinmin
Pan and colleagues explain that scientists have reported a number of advances
toward tiny robots that can walk on water. Such robots could skim across lakes
and other bodies of water to monitor water quality or act as tiny spies.
However, even the most advanced designs -- including one from Pan's team last
year -- can only walk on water. Pan notes that real water striders actually
leap. Making a jumping robot is difficult because the downward force needed to
propel it into the air usually pushes the legs through the water's surface.
Pan's group looked for novel mechanisms and materials to build a true
water-striding robot.
Using
porous, super water-repellant nickel foam to fabricate the three supporting and
two jumping legs, the group made a robot that could leap more than 5.5 inches,
despite weighing as much as 1,100 water striders. In experiments, the robot
could jump nearly 14 inches forward -- more than twice its own length --
leaving the water at about 3.6 miles per hour. The authors report that the
ability to leap will make the bio-inspired microrobot more agile and better
able to avoid obstacles it encounters on the water's surface.

4)
Eye-Writing Technology: Writing in Cursive With Your Eyes Only:
"Contrary
to the current belief, we show that one can gain complete, voluntary control
over smooth pursuit eye movements," says Jean Lorenceau of Université
Pierre et Marie Curie-Paris. "The discovery also provides a tool to use
smooth pursuit eye movements as a pencil to draw, write, or generate a
signature."
The
advance could be of great benefit for people deprived of limb movements, such
as those with Lou Gehrig's disease (also known as ALS), the researchers say. It
might also help to improve eye movement control in people with certain
conditions such as dyslexia or ADHD and/or for experts, such as athletes or
surgeons, whose activities strongly rely on eye movements.
In
everyday life, smooth pursuit eye movement is used to track moving targets,
Lorenceau explains. While people do have the ability to move their eyes in
exquisitely sophisticated ways -- and in fact our eyes never cease to move --
it is normally impossible to control those movements smoothly in any direction.

5) Genetic
Cause of Most Lethal Brain Tumor Pinpointed: May Lead to New Treatment:
Researchers
at Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) have discovered that some cases of
glioblastoma, the most common and aggressive form of primary brain cancer, are
caused by the fusion of two adjacent genes. The study also found that drugs
that target the protein produced by this genetic aberration can dramatically
slow the growth of glioblastomas in mice.
The
findings were published July 26 in the online edition of the journal Science.
"Our
findings are doubly important," said study leader Antonio Iavarone, MD,
professor of pathology and neurology at CUMC, and a member of the Herbert
Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center (HICCC) at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia
University Medical Center. "From a clinical perspective, we have
identified a druggable target for a brain cancer with a particularly dismal
outcome. From a basic research perspective, we have found the first example of
a tumor-initiating mutation that directly affects how cells divide, causing
chromosomal instability. This discovery has implications for the understanding
of glioblastoma as well as others types of solid tumors."
The
fusion of these two genes was observed in just three percent of tumors studied,
so any therapy based on this particular genetic aberration would apply to only
a small subset of glioblastoma patients. "It's unlikely that we will find
a gene fusion responsible for most glioblastomas. But we may be able to discover
a number of other gene fusions, each accounting for a small percentage of
tumors, and each with its own specific therapy," said co-senior author
Anna Lasorella, MD, associate professor of pathology and pediatrics at CUMC and
a member of the Columbia Stem Cell Initiative and the HICCC.
Glioblastomas
are tumors that arise from astrocytes, star-shaped cells that make up the
brain's supportive tissue. Since astrocytes reproduce quickly and are supported
by a large network of blood vessels, glioblastomas are usually highly
malignant. It is estimated that these tumors affect about 10,000 people in the
United States each year. Glioblastoma is typically treated with surgery,
followed by radiation and chemotherapy. However, the disease is invariably
fatal, with a median survival of about 14 months after diagnosis, even with
aggressive therapy. Glioblastomas took the lives of Senator Edward Kennedy in
2009 and New York Mets all-star catcher Gary Carter in 2012.
Several
common single-gene alterations have been observed in glioblastoma.
"However, therapies targeting these alterations have not improved clinical
outcomes, most likely because they have systematically failed to eradicate the
proteins to which the tumor is 'addicted,'" said Dr. Iavarone.

The Indians would like to ensure that the previous match's batting debacle is not repeated. |
The
Indian cricket team will aim to pick up the pieces after a disastrous
performance in the last match and get their campaign back on track when they
take on hosts Sri Lanka in the third ODI to be held on Saturday.
After a
couple of contrasting performances in the two matches at Hambantota where Men
in Blue first won comfortably by 21 runs before being soundly thrashed by nine
wickets, the action moves to the familiar territory of Premadasa Stadium here.
Skipper
Mahendra Singh Dhoni is not very fond of tinkering with his playing XIs but he
now seriously needs to think as to how many more chances does Rohit Sharma
deserve in order to prove that he is a regular match-winner like Virat Kohli or
even fairly consistent on sub-continental tracks like Suresh Raina.
The
Mumbai batsman had scores of 1 and 0 in the first two matches where he was out
in identical fashion chasing a delivery away from his body to be played on.

Pranab Mukherjee Sworn In as 13th President of India |
Pranab
Mukherjee, who has had an active political career spanning five decades, today
became the 13th President of India pledging to protect the Constitution and
rise above personal or partisan interests.
The
76-year-old leader, who is the first leader from Bengal to become President,
was administered the oath of office to "preserve, protect and defend the
constitution and law" by Chief Justice of India Sarosh Homi Kapadia at an
impressive ceremony in the historic Central Hall of Parliament.
The
veteran leader, who had played significant roles in government, party and Parliament
in his long political career, took the oath in English in the name of God to a
thunderous applause and thumping of desks by those in the packed Central Hall.
Vice
President Hamid Ansari, Speaker Meira Kumar, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and
outgoing President Pratibha Patil, Cabinet Ministers, leaders of opposition,
UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Governors, Chief Ministers, MPs and diplomats
were present in the ceremony.
West
Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who announced her party's support to
Mukherjee at the last moment, and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, whose
party JD(U) broke ranks with NDA, also attended the function.
Shortly
after he assumed office, it was announced that Omita Paul, his long-time aide,
was appointed as Secretary to the President.
In his
brief acceptance address, he said the principal responsibility of this office
is to function as the guardian of the Constitution.
"I
will strive to preserve, protect and defend our Constitution not just in word
but in spirit," Mukherjee said in his speech that was punctuated by
repeated thumping of desks and applause. "I am deeply moved by the high
honour you have accorded to me. Such honour exalts the occupant of this office,
even as it demands that he rises above personal or partisan interests in the
service of the national good," he said.
"There
is no greater reward for a public servant than to be elected the first citizen
of our republic," Mukherjee said.
The
veteran leader reminded the gathering whose majority included top leaders of
political parties, MPs, chief ministers and governors that "We are all,
across the divide of party and region, partners at the altar of our
motherland".
He said
word poverty should be eliminated from the dictionary of modern India.
"There
is no humiliation more abusive than hunger. Trickle-down theories do not
address the legitimate aspirations of the poor. We must lift those at the
bottom so that poverty is erased from the dictionary of modern India,"
Mukherjee said.
He also
said that corruption is an evil and "we cannot allow our progressed to be
hijacked by the greed of a few".
2) Assam
violence continues, CM blames Centre :
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi defended his government against allegations that it was slow to react to the rioting, and failed to anticipate the violence |
While the
death toll in the ethnic violence in Assam went up to 44, the blame game within
the political arena was on. Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi defended his
government against allegations that it was slow to react to the rioting, and
failed to anticipate the violence. He said a reduction in Central forces has
made his task tougher. Gogoi also ruled out resignation, saying that his
resignation over the issue was not going to help matters.
Assam-violence |
"If
they had the intelligence reports, why did they not act on their own
then?" Gogoi asked. He further said, "It is my responsibility to get
the normalcy back in the area. Had there been full forces there, the situation
could have been controlled, I agree. I did not have sufficient forces. I
requested the Centre but they had requirements across the country... So I
cannot do anything there... It takes time to make movements..."
Gogoi did
not spare the Opposition either, saying that the violence flared up in Assam
because of the NDA regime. "This situation has flared up because of the
NDA regime. They played the politics. I know Advaniji. They are responsible and
they keep accusing us. It is not me who is playing votebank politics. I do not
need a single vote of the illegal migrants," he said.
Assam-violence |
"Media
keeps asking me if I am resigning. Will my resigning not create chaos?" he
asked, adding, "Like that, administration officers will say they are going
to resign. Then security officers will also say they want to resign... This
cannot go on... That is not the way," he added.
Assam-violence |
In a
strong signal to the three-time Chief Minister, the Congress has set up a
10-member coordination committee for the state. Some Congress MPs like Rehman
Khan had openly criticised Gogoi, seeking his replacement.
This came
even as Congress General Secretary Digvijaya Singh had defended the Assam Chief
Minister saying his performance should not be judged by one incident.
The
violence, that entered the sixth day on Friday, has left over 2 lakh people
homeless in 400 villages. The people were taken to relief camps. Gogoi had
visited the relief camps in Kokrajhar on Thursday
